Mrs. A is a society lady who only wore pure gold jewelry up until the recession struck in 2014. The rise in the dollar made it impossible to shop for gold; as such, she had to settle for costume jewelry because she loved attending parties and loved to always look good and stand out at any event.

You see, most people tend to classify any jewelry that is not 24k GOLD as ‘costume’ jewelry.

The first time Mrs. A came to me, she looked at me with suspicious eyes and asked if I was sure they wouldn’t tarnish or irritate her skin. I had to reassure her by helping her understand the different types of costume jewelry available in the market.

There are different types and classes of jewelry: the gold/silver plated with simulated zircon, the 24k gold plated, the cheap gold plated fashion accessories, gold/silver plated laced with rhinestone, to mention a few.

It is important that you understand these before shopping.

The cheap fashion accessories with plastic rhinestones usually range from 1500 to 5000 Naira. They are lightly coated and can tarnish after a few uses.

The gold/silver plated laced with rhinestone ranges from 5000 to 10,000 Naira. These can last for up to 2 years with care and maintenance before they wear out. The rhinestone also tends to fall off, considering it’s pressed on the metal. No extra effort or prongs are used to keep the stones in place.

For the 24k gold plated jewelry, they do not tarnish if well cared for, neither do they irritate the skin. They are usually triple coated to ensure they last longer. They do not cause irritation because the lead cannot come in contact with the skin.

Zirconium is a semi-precious stone that is quite rare to find nowadays. As such, simulated zircon is used. This is called a cubic zircon. These types of jewelry are carefully handmade. Most times, these designs are diamond imitations.

You’d find an exact design in diamond; the only visible difference, most times, is that the CZ sets are always smaller in size.

Cubic zircon stones are rated from grade A to AAAAA. Grade AAAAA is the highest form. This is why you’d see zircon jewelry of the same design but with different prices and quality. The highest grade stones are colorless and look just like a diamond.

Mrs. A kept on listening and asked if the stones do not fall off easily.

One good thing about CZ jewelry is that they have prong setting; the stones are well placed and a prong holds each stone to ensure it does not fall off easily.

She bought 2 sets of the CZ sets to try — has been using Zircon sets since then. 😊

It is not enough to know where to source, what to source and how to source for jewelry to sell.

Knowing the platforms you should use is also very important. Your circle of friends and family alone cannot sustain your business.

I will be explaining WHY YOU NEED TO SELL ONLINE in my next post, so be on the lookout.
